When you’re a mom finding the time to exercise is one of the hardest things to accomplish. What will you do with the children while you exercise? Gyms have childcare, but can I fit a gym membership into my budget? We soon give up and decide to do absolutely nothing. Before we know it we feel “fluffy” (not fat) and due to pregnancy, parts of our bodies have landed in places they are surely not supposed to be. In my pursuit to become a financial minimalist (I have four boys who eat a lot) and to stay fit, I cancelled my gym membership and set out to find places to MOVE in Chattanooga. These are my top five stroller-friendly places to MOVE and to also plan a FUN DAY OUT with my children.
The Riverpark trail has breathtaking views and there is always a breeze. Children can bring their roller blades or bicycles and join in on the exercise. The Amnicola Marsh section of trail measures 1.8 miles. The entire Tennessee Riverpark trail is eight miles from beginning to end making it a perfect place to train for an upcoming running event. Bronze fish are embedded in the trail at ½ mile increments. Go here for a downloadable TN Riverpark Map.
Pack a frisbee or a soccer ball to play in the large field.
The open playground makes it easy to keep an eye on your children.
Walnut Street Bridge is one of the most beautiful settings in Chattanooga. It was built in 1890 and recently restored in 1993. The bridge measures 2376 feet which is .45 miles, making it a perfect place to train for your first run. You can view the architectural design of downtown Chattanooga along the Riverfront while crossing the bridge and walking the trail at Coolidge Park.
Cool off after your walk at Clumpies where you can choose from a huge variety of ice cream flavors. Since you are already there, enjoy a ride on the carousel at Coolidge Park. If you still need help cooling off, the interactive fountains are guaranteed to make your trip downtown to exercise worth it. You will be the coolest mom ever if you join in on the water fun.
Take a stroll or run a few miles at Camp Jordan. Warning, you may tempted to stop and take in your surroundings, so make sure you set your goals high that day if you are easily distracted by turtles. The trail measures two miles and most of it is shaded and flat.
Sarah discovered flowers along the trail.
Camp Jordan has a totally cool playground especially if you have a child who likes to climb. A covered picnic table is nearby to keep baby out of the sun while the older children play.
This trail is close to my heart as I trained for my first 5K here a few years ago. At every turn there is something new and beautiful to see. The trail runs alongside the creek making you feel like you have been on a little getaway for the day. The trail is very wide and completely flat making it perfect for strollers or a bike ride. Go here for a downloadable map of the Greenway.
Bring a few quarters to feed the friendly ducks.
Perfect place to stop and sit awhile with your child.
Imagination Station is my favorite playground in the Chattanooga area. I have been known to go down a slide or two myself. The playground is located next to the parking lot of the entrance to the Greenway. A large pavilion and benches are available nearby or you can bring a blanket and sit in the open field next to the playground.
