The month of June is bursting with summer activities of all kinds. One particular holiday — though it has been celebrated throughout the country — has only recently become a federal holiday observance. Juneteenth is celebrated on June 19th as an observation of the ending of slavery. It is the celebration of the emancipation of slaves in Texas who, despite having knowledge of the end of the civil war, had not heard that they were free. Some recognize the holiday as “Jubilee Day” or “Freedom Day” and celebrate the day with various cultural events around cities.
Chattanooga will offer events not only to celebrate Juneteenth, but also to offer insight on what makes the holiday important by educating the community on its history and significance.
June is also African American Music Appreciation Month. This celebrates and honors the contributions of black musicians, composers, and songwriters. The City of Chattanooga has plans to honor the spirit of black music by hosting a Roller Skating Event downtown. Finally, the whole family can catch a game at AT&T field as they host the Negro League Appreciation Weekend. This offers families a chance to pay homage to Negro League players and their contribution to Major League Baseball.
