If you know me, you probably know these two things: I love to read and I love to bake. (And maybe that I also like to pack Bento-style lunchboxes for my kids.)
I love to do these things all year round, but for some reason in fall my heart grows three sizes and I embrace ALL THE FALL THINGS with my full spirit. (Except Pumpkin Spice Lattes, because pumpkin and coffee don’t go together for me. But you do you.)
I tend to get a little happy with the pumpkin and ghost-shaped sandwiches, Trader Joe’s fall selection, ALDI’s maple leaf cookies, candy eyes on everything, and even Halloween gummies. And, of course, I start cooking and baking up those fall foods as well!
Here are some of my favorite foods to make in the autumn season:
Sweet Potato Chowder from How Sweet Eats
A new favorite, this sweet potato chowder is the perfect lunch. I subbed bacon for pancetta and spinach for kale because that’s what I had on hand. Easy to make vegetarian without bacon or dairy-free by subbing for the half and half. I will be making this A LOT for myself!
Fall Snack Mix from One Little Project
We discovered this deliciousness on a fall break trip and now I feel it’s my motherly duty to make it every fall. My youngest child asks a lot about the snack with the candy corn, and I tell her I will definitely make it, but only when it’s at least September! This makes a batch so huge I have to use the top of my cake keeper to hold it — I don’t have a bowl large enough.
Salted Caramel Chocolate Pecan Pie from Southern Living
I’ve talked about my favorite holiday pies before, and this one is at the top of the list! I end up making 20-30 of these pies to sell every year. They freeze beautifully and are so very good.
This recipe is one my husband brought into our marriage from his mama, and they are his absolute favorite thing in the world. Little cakey cookies with caramel icing, they go down a little too easily.
Caramel Apple Bundt Cake at Today’s Mama
I am a sucker for caramel anything, and apple is its perfect pairing!
Upside-Down Mini Apple Cakes at Searching for Dessert
Individual desserts are fun and easy to eat.
Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Bread at Mary Carver
I love how many loaves this recipe makes!
Pumpkin Tres Leches Cake at Chattavore
Such a perfect combination, this soaked cake with fluffy whipped cream laced with cinnamon is perfect.
Cinnamon & Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cookies at Mary Carver
Probably MY favorite cookie!
Spiced Applesauce Cake at Smitten Kitchen
Great year-round, but the flavors definitely say fall. Smitten Kitchen can do no wrong in my book.
Homemade Chili at Jo-Lynne Shane
I tried a ton of chili recipes before landing on this one. It’s not really spicy, which is great for me and my kids, but you could add hot sauce or cayenne.
Tuscan Tortellini Soup at Delish
So good my youngest requested it for her 5th birthday. We love the simple ingredients that come together so well.
I hope you are inspired to go cook and bake something this week! And if you’re looking for a good atmospheric read, here are some I recommend this season:
- Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth
- Second Glance by Jodi Picoult
- Peony in Love by Lisa See
- The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
- Her Majesty’s Royal Coven by Juno Dawson
- The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
These all sound yummy Jessie!
