Welcome to St. Elmo! It’s not quite the outskirts of town since it is one of the Chattanooga’s oldest suburbs. It was founded during the yellow fever epidemic of 1878 and has beautiful Lookout Mountain as a border. I have lived in St. Elmo for over eight years and I have seen it blossom. A perk of our community is that it is protected by the historical society, which helps prevent overcrowding as our city grows.
The incline railway is a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike, as it is one of the world’s steepest passageways, built in 1895. If you happen to ride the incline you have to stop at Clumpies for ice cream.
Speaking of food, we have some delicious eats to offer in our ‘hood.
My favorite date nights are at Boccaccia for Italian or 1885 Grill for steak. More casual spots are Mojo Burrito (Sunday $1 tacos), Mr. T’s Pizza and ice cream, Crust Pizza, St. Elmo Deli and Grill and Mt Vernon’s. We also have some diverse foods such as Mrs. B’s Reggae’s Café (authentic Jamaican food) and Sawasdee Thai. For the BBQ lover, there are Purple Daisy and Mike’s Smokehouse. There is plenty of tasty food in waking distance.
We also have our very own coffee shop, Plus Coffee and our watering holes are my favorite: Tap House and Moccasin Bend Brewing Company. Open mic nights and trivia are just a walk away.
Not only are we close enough to ride our bikes down the Riverwalk into downtown, but we can also hike up Guild Trail and check out Glen Falls. We are truly lucky to have beautiful Lookout Mountain in our backyard. If bike riding and hiking aren’t your thing, we have a great wooden playground for the kids and Tennessee Bouldering Authority if you like to climb. We will be getting a yoga studio very soon; Peace Strength Yoga is opening a St. Elmo location.
So, if I haven’t convinced you to move to St. Elmo, I hope I’ve lured you into visiting our cozy little community. Join us October 3 from 6-9pm when we celebrate National Night Out in downtown St. Elmo. There will be vendors selling food, art, and crafts, as well as a variety of informational booths and of course the world-famous Corgi parade!
I hope to see you there!
